Coherence

The act of creation always seemed holistic to me.


A single cell comprises multiple specialised organelles.

Galaxies are a vast collection of matter — stars, planets, gas and dust.

Life is a sum of all our choices.


Products, services, solutions, and the mind(s) behind them should be no different. Similar to dealing with the bane of my existence that is algebra: from a single complex problem we break it down into simpler parts, and solve each part with the main problem as the end goal in mind.


It's a cyclic process — the constant, continuous zooming in on details and zooming out towards the bigger picture for actual context. Every flow and feature though unique on its own, still interconnected, interdepedent and working harmoniously together towards another unique experience greater than the sum of its parts.


All for a higher purpose.

Design is my ikigai — not so much because it's a 9 to 5 I now love, but because I imagine I'll still be working this job even after winning the lottery. I'm only saying this because I have yet to win the lottery.

Jokes aside, that's what it feels like to have a purpose, no? All creation — be it people or product — are made for a purpose, a purpose that goes beyond 'just because', making profit or whatever's needed to complete a user story. A purpose rooted in resolve, passion and surety.


Resolve to solve problems at the root cause beyond just treating symptoms. Passion to not lose sight in the face of egos, both our own and those around us. Surety to presevere in the winds of change — whether it is to remain unwaivering or to simply adapt.

Jokes aside, that's what it feels like to have a purpose, no? All creation — be it people or product — are made for a purpose, a purpose that goes beyond 'just because', making profit or whatever's needed to complete a user story. A purpose rooted in resolve, passion and surety.


Resolve to solve problems at the root cause beyond just treating symptoms. Passion to not lose sight in the face of egos, both our own and those around us. Surety to presevere in the winds of change — whether it is to remain unwaivering or to simply adapt.

Adapting is important — We all know this. The first fish that flopped on land knew this. The minds behind the 9999th AI tool that may 'rEpLAce oUR JoBs' knew this. It assures survival in a fickle world, and nothing is fickler than technology and people.

Yet adaptation is only as relevant as the given context — It's not enough to chase the latest design trends and tools just like everyone else. Where competition has been diluted to conformity, we design to stand out from the masses. Where innovation comes at the cost of accessibility, we design to fit in with conventional mental models.


Such is the way of an ever-changing world — where everything is but a mere balancing act.

Adapting is important — We all know this. The first fish that flopped on land knew this. The minds behind the 9999th AI tool that may 'rEpLAce oUR JoBs' knew this. It assures survival in a fickle world, and nothing is fickler than technology and people.


Yet adaptation is only as relevant as the given context — It's not enough to chase the latest design trends and tools just like everyone else. Where competition has been diluted to conformity, we design to stand out from the masses. Where innovation comes at the cost of accessibility, we design to fit in with conventional mental models.

If balance in the duality of this world were an easy feat, there would be no more war, no more sufferring — both universal and within. The world would finally be perfect.


And in this same perfect world, business goals would be wholly aligned with user needs, both novices and veterans need only share the same user flow, and products would be as accessible as they are aesthetic; as simple as they have depth.


In this perfect world, there would be no need for designers… Yeah, I did not think this through.


Perhaps balance was never about perfection, but rather with what's… enough — the pursuit of balance being a constant dynamic of push and pull, knowing how much is too much and how little is too little — all in all ensuring two opposites are complementary to one another, even if neither are perfect.


True balance lies within coherence, and that in itself is perfection.
